UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO - Net Optics, a global leader in passive monitoring access technology, has contributed a range of innovative Taps and Analyzer Switches to the CalNGI Network Performance Reference Laboratory (NPRL) at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). One of the most important thrusts of NPRL is the test and measurement of 10 Gigabit Ethernet. The Net Optics contribution is targeted specifically at the lab's 10 Gigabit test and measurement efforts.
In addition to testing several manufacturers' 10 Gigabit route switches, the NPRL will use the Net Optics Taps for testing OC-192 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections in the National Science Foundation's TeraGrid Project, a next-generation distributed supercomputer that links sites across the United States over four 10 Gigabit communications channels.
"We're pleased to use Net Optics single-mode taps in our pre-deployment testing of the TeraGrid's 10 Gigabit links," commented Kevin Walsh, Director of CalNGI. "With the transparent Net Optics Taps functioning as permanent access ports, researchers will be able to monitor full-duplex link performance without interfering with the data stream or introducing a point of failure into the network."
The single-mode Net Optics Taps are the market's first Taps to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet, enabling communications at wavelengths of both 1310 and 1550 nm. Initially deployed to support the NPRL, the Taps will be available for general release in October, and will be key for the NPRL team in additional testing efforts.
Net Optics has also contributed a Span Port Analyzer Switch to the NPRL efforts, enabling the NPRL 10 Gigabit Analyzer to monitor the four TeraGrid network links without any changes in network connections or software configuration. Although first deployed at the NPRL to monitor 10 Gigabit Ethernet, the all-optical Switch design can also support monitoring with any fiber analyzer interface.
